Who Is A Modern Maker?

How do you define your style? Are you modern, traditional or transitional? Or do you feel that your style blends some of these definitions together?
So what defines a modern quilter?
She uses bold colors and prints. Think Tula Pink and Kaffe. He uses big colors and prints, brights and bolds. The modern quilters rebel against their mother’s ideas and plans for quilt design. Regarding color choices, what is old is new again, as current new quilters are going more toward neutrals, sages and blues. Those patterns are going to look vintage as well.
In the past, white was the rule for the background color in quilt design. The modern quilter is branching out. Black is really popular, but you will see a much wider variety in your background colors from previous trends.
A modern quilter gravitates toward high contrast concepts. You see this idea in the bold black and white graphic quilts. And imagine adding in spots of red. They are big and bold and eye-catching.
A modern quilter likes solid colors. Maybe there are just two colors, or maybe every color of the rainbow. And anywhere in between.
A modern quilter does not shy away from improvisational piecing. Imagine moving forward with a project with no plan. You just sew as you go, no plan in place, and not laid out. There is a freedom to just see what happens and how it all comes together.
A modern quilter also embraces minimalism, with large sections of same color, and expansive negative space. And a modern quilter’s gridwork may be unbalanced. The design may be heavy to one side with that negative space on the other.
These elements define a modern quilter
- Pattern selection - how can I make this pattern my own? Twist it around, change things up and free form your patterns and layouts.
- Choices in color include solids, earth tones and taupe. And, can you believe it? 1880s reproduction fabrics are becoming a thing.
- Your own state of mind - you define yourself, clean lines bold colors graphic patterns individuality.
