Meet Becca!

2nd Aug 2021

I never planned on falling in love with sewing. For years and years I proclaimed that sewing was the one craft I wouldn’t touch. Seriously. There was no way I was going to touch a sewing machine or needle. But, I reluctantly accepted a challenge from my friend to dip my toes into the world of sewing in November 2015.

I don’t know about you, but my mom used to tell me don’t knock something until you try it…and I should have listened.  It only took one evening to realize I had been “bit by the bug.” By the end of the weekend, I had my own little basket of notions and a lovely new Brother sewing machine (which I affectionately dubbed the ‘Costco Special’).  For the next several months, I used online videos to help me cut my teeth…and focused on practical sewing (aka making things that could be used in everyday life: totes, pot holders, clothing hacks for my family).

After a few months, my mom dared me to try quilting. After I stopped laughing, I told her there was no way I would ever make a single quilt.  Again, this area intimidated me.  But…after a lot of begging and pleading, I tackled my first real quilt: a rag quilt featuring the Chipper Line by Tula Pink I was hooked!  I even found myself trying to figure out ‘fancy quilting,’ which I later learned was FMQ…but boy the struggles!  Like most beginner quilters who don’t know any better, those early FMQ days were with my feed dogs up, with my general presser foot on, and my little itty bitty Brother.

After tackling a few quilts to cut my teeth, I was sure I was ready for something more challenging. My local quilt shop was hosting a block of the month for the Gravity quilt by Jaybird Quilts. I thought I knew everything there was to know and this would be easy. Truth is - that quilt is still in my UFO pile because I learned very quickly how much I didn’t know. Thankfully, my LQS had a quilting class that met weekly. I signed up and learned and tackled two of the same quilt in the class. I started one in printed cotton - but when I saw a classmate’s quilt made of batiks, I was floored - and had to start a second one. Looking back, this was the moment I found my love for batik fabrics. (Seriously, I could collect all the bolts).

As I learn things that excite me, I like to share those tips/tricks/techniques with the world.  Enter my YouTube channel, Sew Becca.  Sure, there were others out there doing the same thing - and my plan was never to replace any of them, but rather to join their ranks.  I wasn’t fooling myself -- I realized I was still very green; but I hoped that by putting myself out there and trying to learn and step outside my comfort zone, folks would want to come alongside and learn with me.  I don’t profess to be the absolute authority on anything -- even quilting…but, I’m happy to be your guinea pig, or host a session for a bunch of us to try something out!

Ultimately, that’s what Sew Becca is all about.  Building and encouraging one another to tackle those bucket list projects, big and small, because our fabric looks better in a finished product we can enjoy than sitting on our shelf.  (Though, let’s be real - there’s nothing wrong with shelves of fabric).

I’d love it if you join me in my journey by subscribing to me on YouTube.
