Fall Leaf Coasters

Fall Leaf Coasters

4th Nov 2021

Living in the Midwest I am fortunate to experience the full range of seasons. I love going for a walk in the woods this time of year to see the leaves quietly falling to the ground creating an ever changing patchwork of color on the path. November’s Java membership fabrics in their warm fall colors inspired me to make these leaf shaped coasters to be enjoyed with a warm cup of cocoa and your favorite cookies.

To get started you will need to download and print this free leaf template from Shabby Art Boutique. I would recommend using Hobbs black batting that can be purchased by the yard on Amazon. Black batting is used in quilts made with primarily dark colored fabrics. For this project it blends perfectly with the fall leaf colors so that you can leave the raw edges of the fabric to give some texture to the leaf.

Using the template trace the leaf shape onto the fabric using a chalk pencil.

Cut a piece of black batting and backing fabric approximately the same size square as the leaf making a quilt sandwich.

It will be helpful to use some basting spray to hold the layers in place as you take it to the machine to sew. I like to use the Wonderfil 40 wt thread in a coordinating color to outline the leaf and sew the veins of the leaf.

I stitched around the lines twice for a more defined look. Using a pair of sharp pointed scissors trim about ⅛” from the outer stitching line.

These are really quick to make and are perfect to give as a hostess gift or for Thanksgiving table decor. When not in use as coasters they look so colorful on the table as fall decorations.

How will you use your quilted fall leaves?
